Japan's population declines

Tokyo, Dec 27 (PTI) Japan's population fell by 20,000 in 2005 in the first such decline in one-year period since the World War II, the government said today, raising concerns about the low birthrate of the world's second largest economy.

The total population decreased by 20,000 to 127,760,000 people as of October one from a year earlier, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications said while releasing the results of the census.

The census, conducted every five years, confirmed the government's last week announcement that Japan's population has started shrinking in 2005, Kyodo news agency reported.
