When this column said goodbye to sports a dozen years ago, it did so with the intention of not looking back.

But once in a while there's occasion for remembrance and it happened again yesterday when the Hall of Fame ballot that arrives here every year was returned with a mark next to Jim Rice's name.

There's a file here that overflows with dog-eared notes from a relationship that began with his first appearance in 1974 and ended with his final at-bat in 1989.

That might suggest we were friends. We were not.
