When the Horseflies walked onstage for the first time at the 1991 Telluride Bluegrass Festival, an uneasy question mark hung in the thin air. Much of the audience had come to the mountain that year to bathe in the incredible lightness of James Taylor, Alison Krauss and the Indigo Girls.
On that warm June night, they beheld the pale-faced members of the Horseflies dressed completely in black and they were not making jokes. Maybe the crowd was anxious because the band was named after a biting insect that sucks blood from barnyard animals.
