The late American observer Charles Kuralt used to say that ordinary, everyday kindness makes up for the callousness reflected in newspaper headlines. This is my testimony that what he said is true--especially in my homeland, the Deep South, after Hurricane Katrina.
In August 1998, I moved to New Orleans, where the summer heat reaches 100 degrees and the humidity 102 percent. I had just settled into my first cup of chicory coffee and a crumpled copy of The Times-Picayune when I saw the first of many such headlines there: "Teen killed at the corner of Pleasure and Desire."
