ON THE face of it, it seems too good to be true: one simple remedy that can prevent 16 or more different cancers and even extend the life of some people who already have the disease.

But that is what a major new study into vitamin D seems to be suggesting and although scientists will continue to argue about the detailed evidence, you can be sure that pharmaceutical companies will be taking action.

Nobody can patent vitamin D, any more than they can patent the sunlight that produces the vitamin in our skin, but drug firms are already spending millions searching for lookalike chemicals which they can patent and sell.

And no doubt they will ...
