The new digital ATC system will be installed on heavily-used sections that link major stations in the Tokyo metropolitan area. These are sections for which JR East, as the major operator, has a key social responsibility. It has therefore taken a leading role in the development of the new system, which integrates a large number of signalling components.
JR East has endeavoured to make all aspects of this system compliant with the recently established IEC62278 (RAMS) international standard. The Tokyo metropolitan area is important to us because it generates roughly 45% of the company's total revenue, with more than 76 billion passenger-km of travel annually.
