Before starting to plant, you will I probably have to improve your soil's fertility, especially if it is a first-season garden. Of course, the first harvest will give you some indication of soil quality, but conducting a soil test is a more precise way to learn about the makeup of your soil.
Soil analysis
Just as a doctor performs an x-ray or blood test to accurately diagnose a patient's condition, the organic gardener uses soil analysis to correctly determine the health of the soil. A healthy, balanced soil will produce hardy crops that are free of insects and disease. There are two basic procedures for testing soil available to the home gardener.
