Dec. 31--Rhode Island does not stack up to its New England neighbors when it comes to economic competitiveness, according to a study by a Boston-based group.

Actually, Rhode Island doesn't stack up to most of the states in the nation. The state ranked 41st in this year's annual state competitiveness report by the Beacon Hill Institute, a think tank at Suffolk University in Boston.

Rhode Island ranked lowest among New England states in this year's report, released yesterday by the think tank. Massachusetts ranked as the most competitive state in the nation, and New Hampshire came in second.
