Drunken-driving arrests and alcohol-related fatalities were down in 2005 in Oswego County from a year ago, and county law enforcement officials hope New Year's celebrations won't add to either of those figures.
County STOP-DWI coordinator Paul Stoner is hoping no tragedies strike this weekend.
"I want to get up Monday morning and read boring news in the paper," Stoner said.
As of Friday, there had been five alcohol-related deaths in the county this year, down from eight in 2004, Stoner said. The number of DWI arrests fell as well: down to about 750 this year compared to 807 last year.
