MOST art forms move in and out of fashion. Baroque opera is unusual in going out of fashion and staying there. Except for a flutter of interest in Britain and Germany during the 1920s, few operas before Mozart's have been staged since the 18th century.
Until now. Today in Europe there are often as many as a dozen baroque operas simultaneously on show. The performances range from the grand and metropolitan, such as the English National Opera's version of Handel's "Ariodante", to touring performances in France of a reconstructed version of Vivaldi's "Montezuma" by Jean-Claude Malgoire's La Grand Ecurie et la Chambre du Roy.
