Dear Carol: This year my elephant trunk plant came up beautifully. I'm sending you a picture to share with your readers. - J.K., North Syracuse.
Dear J.K.: It's not hard to figure out how elephant trunk plant got its common name. The flowers in silhouette are just the right shape. The plant is actually a kind of amaranth, Amaranthus gangeticus. These are showy annuals that can be grown from seed. I've noticed several different kinds of amaranths exhibited in the Cut Flower Show at the New York State Fair through the years.
