In the final analysis on the final day of the year, 2005 can be summed up in one word on the business page: acquisitions.
Procter & Gamble, Federated Department Stores, Chiquita and Omnicare spent billions this year buying competitors and further establishing themselves as U.S. leaders in everything from the broad category of "consumer products" to the tightly defined niche of pharmaceutical supplies and services for nursing homes.
