SAN JUAN -- Perhaps because it is legally part of the United States, Wal-Mart's operations in Puerto Rico do not get a lot of attention, despite the fact that they are growing and profitable. As president Ignacio Perez Lizuar notes, there is still ample scope for market-share expansion on the island.
Also frequently overlooked is the fact that Wal-Mart's Puerto Rican business dates back to the early days of Wal-Mart International. The company's first foray beyond the United States borders was its joint venture with Cifra SA in Mexico in 1991.
