From its beginnings, molecular diagnostics has been challenged to find its identity in the field of laboratory medicine. Some describe molecular diagnostics as a compilation of methods and technologies that use DNA or RNA to test for disease, while others see it as its own discipline within the clinical lab. Regardless to which definition one subscribes, molecular diagnostics has emerged as a significant opportunity for the clinical lab. In a period of less than a decade, molecular-diagnostic tools have evolved to test patient samples for a wide range of diseases and predispositions, as has the corresponding clinical need for tests based on the analysis of gene sequences.
