Jan. 5--Before going to bed every night, women who use the nighttime shelter at Dorothy's Place in Salinas receive a clean pillowcase on which to lay their heads. On Wednesday, the Salinas Planning Commission ensured that they will continue having a safe place to spend the night through the winter -- and perhaps even longer. After an emotional hearing packed with nearly 40 supporters, commissioners unanimously approved Women Alive, a homeless shelter for single women in Salinas, believed to be the first of its kind in Monterey County.
