PHOTOSELECTIVE vaporization of the prostate (PVP) laser provides long-term symptomatic improvements in men with obstructive benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), according to a Mayo Clinic study.

A group of 94 men with obstructive BPH were treated with near-contact PVP using a potassium-titanylphosphate laser and followed for up to five years (mean, 3.5 years). All patients had moderate to severe lower urinary tract symptoms prior to treatment, and none of the patients had malignancy or other causes of urinary obstruction.
