THE NATIONAL Wilms Tumor Study (NWTS) Group has recommended surgical exploration of the contralateral kidney in children undergoing nephrectomy for unilateral Wilms tumor to rule out the bilateral form of the disease. A review of data from the fourth NWTS clinical trial (NWTS-4), however, suggests advanced imaging techniques may make exploration unnecessary.
Between August 1986 and September 1994, 3,335 patients enrolled in NWTS-4 with newly diagnosed Wilms tumor. Less than 0.1% of those patients developed the bilateral form of the disease and potentially benefited from surgical exploration, researchers reported in The Journal of Urology (2005;174:1519-1521).
