Jan. 6--TOKYO -- The Japan Railway group said Friday 9.84 million passengers traveled by JR trains during the year-end and New Year holiday season, up 1.6 percent from a year earlier for the sixth straight yearly increase.
Tokaido Shinkansen bullet trains carried 2.62 million passengers from Dec. 28 through Jan. 5, with the number of travelers on trains leaving Tokyo on Dec. 30 and those bound for Tokyo on Jan. 3 hitting an all-time high, according to the JR group, which comprises six railway operators.
