Persis walked thoughtfully down the street under the big elms. The sun was setting behind the hills across the harbor, and the sky was a creamy yellow above the smokey blue haze of the downtown streets. There was a chill in the air and Persis shivered but she was so lost in thought that she did not remember that she was carrying her jacket on her arm.
