Jan. 8--ELON -- Brian Waters' once-white socks had turned to predominately pink Saturday night, the result of too many washes mixed with Elon University maroon. But that new, softer color suggested nothing about Elon's intense and gritty effort during its 65-59 Southern Conference victory against Appalachian State in men's basketball. At one point with less than 5A' minutes remaining, four players dove to the Alumni Gym floor in pursuit of a loose ball. Three of them were wearing Elon jerseys. Waters secured it, called timeout -- mostly delighting the sellout crowd of 1,550 on hand -- and the Phoenix scored when the game resumed. ...
