The Lower Manhattan Development Corporation (LMDC) announced on Nov. 10 that it would make available $35 million in cultural enhancement funding grants to existing and new cultural institutions south of Houston Street. Applications were due Dec. 22; the first recipients will be named in early 2006. At the same time, the LMDC allocated up to $10 million in additional funds for the creation of a new downtown facility for the Drawing Center, which canceled its plans to relocate to the World Trade Center site this summer, after Governor George Pataki issued a warning regarding exhibitions programming perceived as "anti-American" [see "Front Page," Sept.
