Excitement over San Francisco's new de Young museum was obvious when 50,718 visitors attended the 31-hour free public opening on Oct. 15-16 [see article this issue]. Drawing in art and architecture professionals and enthusiasts from around the world, the event was one of the biggest cultural moments the city has seen since the 1995 opening of the Mario Botta-designed San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The de Young's festivities would have seemed an occasion for local art institutions and galleries to mount spectacular shows, hold special events or try other means to attract the thousands of out-of-towners descending on their city.
