Modafinil reduces but does not eliminate excessive sleepiness in patients with shift-work sleep disorder (N Engl J Med. 2005;353:476-486). Adults aged 18-60 years with shift-work sleep disorder and excessive sleepiness during the night shift for at least three months (N = 209) were randomized to modafinil 200 mg vs. placebo taken 30-60 minutes before the start of each night shift for three months.
