Crisp maker Golden Wonder went into administration yesterday, putting 850 jobs at risk.
Administrators Kroll said the company suffered "serious trading difficulties" as it tried to compete in a market dominated by rival Walkers.
Kroll said it had already taken the decision to close part of Golden Wonder's site at Corby, Northamptonshire, where a total of 350 people work.
