Almost every magazine that has an interest in sheep or goats will sooner or later run an article on guardian dogs and their contribution to the home-steader, sheepherder, manager, owner or industry. That's fine. No doubt they have a place in our society.
I have encountered a major drawback.
A neighbor had a major sheep operation and purchased a big, fluffy, white pup to aid in protection. Being interested, I visited and asked to see pup and was warned I could look but don't talk to or attempt to appear friendly. Dog was corralled with some bucks, she being too large to escape if she would care to. And so the "bonding" too place.
