On a spring afternoon last year, several students at a private high school in New York became ill. They vomited, and some passed out at their desks. What first looked like a case of bad cafeteria food turned out to be a much more serious problem--drug overdoses.

The teens had taken Xanax, a powerful prescription medicine used to treat anxiety; they bought it from fellow students. And it didn't take much to get them sick. "In a couple of the cases, only one pill was taken," says Inspector Daniel Jackson of the White Plains police force.
