Jan. 6--TOKYO--The Liberal Democratic Party will propose by this summer that the government lift the ban on the use of outer space for defense purposes, a party source said Thursday.
The LDP will call on the government to reinterpret the principle of using outer space only for "nonmilitary" purposes so nonoffensive technology can be used for self-defense purposes, as is common in many other developed countries.
If the ban is lifted, the nation will be able to launch a high-resolution reconnaissance satellite, boosting the nation's space industry, which lags behind its U.S. and European counterparts.
