Jan. 10--Mining isn't an industry usually associated with the sandy shores of Cape Cod.
But the Mine Safety and Health Administration considers the sand and gravel pits that pock the peninsula to be mining operations, and covers them with a strict set of federal regulations.
"When people think of mining they think of going underground," said Frances Kittridge, who runs Safety Matters, a mine and transportation safety program in Webster. "But any extraction of a natural resource or the processing of it is considered mining."
In Vermont, that includes granite quarries.
