The U.S. Supreme Court ruled on June 18 that a public school district may, without violating the Constitution, provide a sign-language interpreter for a deaf student attending a Catholic school. But the narrowly decided, closely watched case did not resolve disagreements among the justices concerning the court's Lemon test--its standard means of determining what is an unconstitutional state "establishment" of religion.
In a 5-4 ruling the court said that James Zobrest, a student in Tucson, Arizona, could receive the services of a taxpayer-supported hearing interpreter while attending Salpointe Catholic High School. "If a handicapped child chooses to enroll in a ...
