The visual clue came first, an indication to Bruce Sutter that jubilation could be a moment away and his long wait finally might have ended. In his 13th year on the ballot, Sutter was elected to the Hall of Fame on Tuesday.
He becomes the first pitcher elected who never started a game and built his Hall of Fame credentials strictly as a relief pitcher.
A closer before that role was whittled to one inning of work, Sutter turned the split-fingered pitch into his signature weapon with the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Atlanta Braves from 1976 to 1988.
