Early in August 2005, many of the 3.5 million Italian citizens living abroad were hit by a bombshell: The news from Italy was that private TV group Mediaset had acquired broadcasting rights to the main Italian soccer championship. It was assumed that state TV organization, RAI, would not be airing the games domestically anymore and that Rai International would no longer broadcast the games internationally. This was a shock for all those people who religiously follow their favorite teams.
