No longer an industry joke, the Golden Globes suddenly finds itself facing an unexpected problem: It might have become too respectable.

There's no longer any doubt the Hollywood Foreign Press Assn.'s annual kudos now stand as one of the most important pit stops on the road to Oscar. With the Academy Awards pushed back a week this year, the Globes could take on even more weight as Oscar voters ponder nominations.

But what's good for the HFPA, and the studios' Oscar campaigns, isn't necessarily good for viewers watching the show on NBC or the lucky few who actually get a seat inside the relatively tiny ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
