Jan. 11--Samuel Fletcher was a patriot. And fortunately for Lima, his loyalty to his adopted home town was as strong as his patriotism.

Fletcher, a Civil War veteran, was a pioneer in Lima who worked to build a life here after the oil boom of 1885. He was also involved in state politics and by all accounts, never missed marching in a Memorial Day parade. It was quite a life for a man from humble beginnings.

Fletcher was born on a farm in Potter County, Pa., on Dec. 13, 1844. He would have happily remained on the farm, had the Civil War not interrupted his life. But the call to help the Union was strong, and Samuel, ...
