In September, Norwegian explorer and AINA Fellow Jan Erling Haugland was awarded the King's Medal of Merit in Gold in honour of his lifetime work in polar science and his humanitarian efforts. The King's Medal was instituted by King Haakon VII in 1908 to award individuals for service in the arts, science, or business or for distinguished public service.
