The Downtown Naperville Alliance rocketed into the new year with record-shattering holiday sales of its gift certificates.
Roughly $230,000 in gift certificates were sold in December, more than doubling the month's total from the year before. In December 2004, shoppers spent about $100,000 on downtown gift certificates.
"We knew we were doing a huge volume, but I had no idea it was this big," said Patti Roberts, executive director of the alliance.
She attributes the success to two things: Word of mouth, and a new partnership with some schools and non-profit groups.
