Jan. 12--Clayson Knitting Co. Inc. is laying off 125 employees at its Red Springs sock-making plant by mid-February.
Workers are losing their jobs as the company turns the plant into a distribution center, said Bruce Hogan, director of manufacturing.
Clayson Knitting employs about 450 people at its plants in Red Springs and Star, which is about 25 miles northwest of Pinehurst in Montgomery County.
The jobs in Red Springs are being replaced by imported goods and offshore labor, Hogan said. The company said it plans to keep about 50 employees in Red Springs to run the distribution center, he said.
