In the period following the Second World War, particularly after 1,960, the banking sector in advanced capitalist countries experienced profound changes. Within most countries, segmented markets for commercial lending, residential mortgages, investment banking, small savings, and consumer lending gradually opened up to new entrants. Consequently, competition intensified between different types of institutions - commercial banks, savings banks, building societies, financial co-operatives - long accustomed to sheltered market niches.
