THE CURRENT fashion for naming children after Biblical characters has given us a whole host of little Aarons, Samuels and Magdalenas, but so far the trend hasn't stretched to Judas.

In Germany, it is actually against the law to name your child Judas. And indeed, what God-fearing parent would want their child to be linked with the apostle who betrayed Jesus with a kiss in order to gain 30 pieces of silver - by the standards of his time about a day's wages?

The name has since New Testament times been reviled by Christianity and history.
