David Kruidenier, the newspaper executive who led the Star Tribune in the 1980s and was a grandson of the Cowles family publishing pioneer, Gardner Cowles Sr., died of pneumonia Monday in Des Moines. He was 84.
Kruidenier succeeded John Cowles Jr., his cousin, as president and CEO of Cowles Media Co., owner of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, in January 1983.
Cowles praised his cousin's news judgment and executive skills.
"He certainly knew the newspaper business. He was well experienced. I always gave him high marks, especially for understanding the news and editorial side," Cowles said.
