Jan. 13--If I had an 11-year-old, which I do not, I can't say whether I'd consider When Jeff Comes Home appropriate reading. It would depend on the child. The novel, written for teens, includes some pretty strong themes. It deals with a teenage boy who returns to his family after being held for two years by a sexually abusive kidnapper. I'd want to consider whether my child were emotionally equipped to cope with such a dark storyline. I would not, however, presume to make this decision on behalf of everybody else's child, which is what the Irving school district allowed one parent to do.
