After three years of a destructive civil war, Cote d'Ivoire is enjoying a rare period of calm. Tensions are still high and the country is still divided but all parties seem anxious to find lasting solutions to their particular grievances. Before the civil war, Cote d'Ivoire was the strongest and most stable economy in West Africa. It has now lost that position, but its economy has shown remarkable resilience. There is little doubt that if the current lack of hostilities holds into the near future, the economy will once again dominate the region; on the other hand, if fighting breaks out again, the under-invested and under-maintained economic infrastructure may collapse. ...
