THE TOWN
Population: Bivalve is the waterfront section of Commercial Township, which includes the upland community of Port Norris. Across the channel, fishermen also dock in Maurice River Township. The combined population on both sides of the river is 12,187. Fleet size: About 10 to 12 larger boats tie up in Bivalve (oyster and clam boats) and several dozen small boats work off small river docks.
TOP LANDINGS
Federal and state landing statistics aren't broken out for ports this small, but Bivalve is the primary location for New Jersey's oyster harvest. In 2004, the state's total allowable catch of 67,700 bushels was worth around $2 million. The ...
