Three months remain before the Gulf of Mexico shrimp fishery really begins producing for 2006. And despite the astonishing destruction left by hurricanes Katrina, Rita, Wilma and Dennis, several encouraging facts are apparent.
Much of the fleet is capable and ready to fish, and more will be by May when the browns seem likely to appear in great abundance, based on autumn indications. Processors are back in business. The average ex-vessel price of shrimp is heading in the right direction, at least in some parts of the southeast. And fishermen are throwing themselves into the rebuilding effort with remarkable determination.
