It began way-back-when as Perky's Shoe Repair, a business with a future in those pre-World War II days of frugality and fine leather footwear.

Shoe sales became a big part of the mix after brothers Bill and Dave Baker bought the store in 1957 from Bill's father-in-law and changed its name to Baker's Shoes. The little store held its own, tucked into Eugene's Four Corners Shopping Center at Highway 99 North and Roosevelt Boulevard, as shoe store chains, department stores and eventually big box stores in turn took sizeable bites out of the footwear market.
