Analysis: Observers say only consensus will end debate
Build consensus. That is the key. Without it, San Diego will never have a new international airport.
That's the message of dispassionate observers experienced in airport development.
"It took eight years, two referendums and an aggressive campaign by the city to get the Denver airport approved," said Chris Duerkson, an airport development specialist with Denver-based Clarion Associates, a land-use consulting firm.
Duerkson worked for then-Mayor Federico Pena during Denver's contentious airport development process. The $3 billion facility is scheduled to open in December.
