A charred corpse with a cigarette stuck in its mouth and a loaf of bread forced under one rigid arm. A burning armored personnel carrier surrounded by cheering youths. Six men pulled from a minibus, asked what tribe they belong to and executed for giving the wrong answer. Roadblocks manned by armed 14-year-olds high on marijuana and glue. Hospitals choked with wounded and filled with refugees fleeing the fighting.
They could be scenes from any one of Africa's civil wars--in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Zaire's Kivu Province, even Angola. But this carnage took place in the black townships on Johannesburg's East Rand, a mere 15-minute drive from the conference center ...
