In a previous life, he would routinely run six to eight miles in the space of an hour. Or perhaps bike 50 before breakfast.
Then came an accident on the job that destroyed most of the discs and muscles in his back, followed by all the surgical attempts to "fuse" his back into some semblance of what it used to be.
Aside from infections caused by the screws that failed to straighten his body, or the chronic bone condition that now afflicts him . . . pain is what defines his life these days.
