Oxidative stress is defined as physiological stress on the body that is caused by the cumulative damage done by free radicals inadequately neutralized by antioxidants. It is imposed on cells as a result of an increase in the generation of oxidants, a failure to repair oxidative damage, or a decrease in antioxidant production. These are commonly associated with the process of aging but also appear to be increased in persons with chronic kidney disease (CKD) as well as other chronic diseases including cancer, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, and even depression.
