As American households grow busier, pros say homeowners are increasingly drawn to the convenience of gas fireplaces. "They used to be considered perhaps a compromise from a wood-burning fireplace," says Kai Tong, chief of architecture for Potomac, Md., design/build firm Hopkins & Porter Construction. "But I think the pure convenience of them ... makes the gas fireplace a big advantage."
