Swiss pharmaceutical major Novartis has, at last, introduced its new COX-2 inhibitor Prexige (lumiracoxib) in Europe, debuting the drug in the UK on January 16 after receiving marketing approval back in 2004.
The company delayed introduction of this osteoarthritis/ pain agent after problems of increased cardiovascular events were revealed with the COX-2 class of compounds leading to the recall of Merck & Co's Vioxx (rofecoxib) in 2004 and Pfizer's Bextra (valdecoxib) last year (Marketletter July 4, 2005) while it awaited full evaluation of additional clinical data.
Although this is the first European launch for Prexige, it debuted in Brazil last July and ...
